How do I take a leadership role in the GGSCF?

What does the GGSCF do and how can I learn more about the GGSCF?
The best way is to browse the web site and in particular the media centre menu as the articles here will give you an idea of what the GGSCF has done in the past. If you have made it here you already have access to a lot of information about the GGSCF. If there is still more you want to know just send any questions by mail, email or if you want to talk to a youth leave us a message on our telephone line and we will call you back.

What do you have to do to become a member of the GGSCF?
There is no membership. All those who participate regardless of age, gender, religion decide what they would like to do. The GGSCF Board approves projects that are carried out under the GGSCF name to make sure they are in keeping with the vision, mission and objectives of the GGSCF.

Who can take part in the GGSCF?
Just about anyone may take part in the GGSCF regardless of age, gender or religion. Some activities may put certain constraints such as running along the road may not be suitable for a 4 year old or we may have certain age requirements for the senior’s trip etc. We however require that those who take part project a positive image of the group and therefore may exclude any individuals who may cause a disturbance or nuisance to others.

How do I get involved?
The best way is to take part in events or activities arranged by the GGSCF, most of these are posted on the web site. Then once you get to know the volunteers, if you like to get involved with organizing just let them know. Meetings take place at various branches each month the details of which can be found under the meeting menu on the home page of the web site. If this is not convenient then email us your interests and we will do our best to keep in contact with you. Although the organization is primarily aimed at children it does require adult volunteers (usually parents) to help with the activities.

Who runs the GGSCF?
There are five individuals who are legally responsible for the GGSCF since it is a registered charity with Canada Revenue Agency. These individuals also look after the interests of the GGSCF and make decisions on behalf of the GGSCF. The majority of the Board members are youth under the age of 25 years. The Board takes into account the feelings, aspirations and interests of those who participate and volunteer in the activities of the GGSCF when determining the future direction of this organization. You can contact the Board members by mail or email.

Does the work I do count for “volunteer” work for my school reports?
Yes, we can fill in reports for any volunteer activities that you have been involved with. We also can provide references for those who lead projects and help organize events. However, we would like everyone to know that you should get involved in the activities first and then ask for references. Some individuals ask for references and then commit to volunteer work. We do not think this is ethical, also the best volunteers are those who want to and not because they have to meet certain hours for a school report.

How does the GGSCF sponsor a child?
The GGSCF is a small organization and does not have the means to support children directly under it’s own name. As children and youth do most of the work it is difficult to have a structure to provide direct support. The GGSCF therefore chooses to sponsor children through existing charities who help children in keeping with the vision and objectives of the GGSCF. The GGSCF arranges charity events where children collect donations, these are then used to sponsor the children. A couple of times a year the children who help with the GGSCF write to the children that are sponsored.

Is anyone in the GGSCF paid for his or her work?
All those who help out with the GGSCF do so on a volunteer basis and there are no paid employees. Children, youth and parents do most of the work. Where we do not have the expertise we will seek individuals who can volunteer their skills but if this is not possible we may then have to seek paid services.

Where is the GGSCF located?
The GGSCF is located in Toronto. The mailing address of Gursikh Sabha Canada (Scarborough Gurdwara) is used and a portable located there is where most of the meetings take place. The Gursikh Sabha Canada Management Committee have given their permission to use the mailing address and keep the portable on Gurdawara property. There are branches ar other Gurdwaras as wel, see the meetings menu to get the locations.

I am not in the Toronto area and cannot attend meetings, how can I get involved?
Please contact us at our email address and tell us a little bit about you and we will try our best to have you involved with some aspect of the GGSCF. Many things can be done from a remote location especially with technology these days. If there is a number of you and you want to start up a group then please let us know as well.

How do I take a leadership role in the GGSCF?
The GGSCF has rules by which Board members are changed. However if you are involved with the activities of the GGSCF and show leadership, determination and commitment and meet the requirements of age etc. then it is likely you will be asked to serve on the Board. Individuals cannot nominate themselves to the Board they will be asked. The present Board believes their position is to serve and not give orders rather to take them from the children and youth that help out and participate in the activities
