Bus Sewa at the Nagar Kirtan

29 April 2009 One Comment

bus_helpers.jpg For the 3rd year running the GGSCF volunteers managed the bus transportation at the Toronto downtown Nagar Kirtan held on April 26, 2009. In total, 88 school buses shuttled Sikhs from 20 different locationsĀ like , BurlingtonĀ and Whitby to the Better Living Centre at the CNE. Even though it was cold, the volunteers did not quit and stayed right to the end when everyone had gone home from City Hall at 6:30pm, our best time ever. Volunteers noticed a marked difference over the 3 years from almost a mob type mentality of pushing and shoving to get on buses to one of more calm and following a system of lining up, etc. People are also more polite and those who are old or with family also do not panic at the thought of being left alone not knowing if buses would come back. They sit back and know that the yellow shirt volunteers are not going to leave them and will get them home. There is still a way to go but it is good to see the progress and our community evolving to a new way of getting on a bus than the traditional method used in Punjab.
