Run Day 5

Halifax & Ferry to PEI

Camera & Video Crew: Jasjit, Amanjit, & Jagdeep

It was a late start to the day as we all had a chance to sleep-in on our day off after spending the night with various families of the Maritime Sikh Society. We are extremely thankful to the following families who opened their homes to us, and took care of us as part of their own families

Sukhjinder Dhillon
Jasbir Bajwa
Dr. S. Sodhi
Satnam Randhawa
Surinder Kang
Joginder Singh
Raghbir Singh
Harjit Seyan

We all got together at the Halifax Gurdwara in the morning where the weekly Diwaan was scheduled, and we were warmly welcomed and greeted by the local sangat, including parents, kids, youth and seniors, who filled the Gurdwara with their smiles, encouragement and praises for all. Everyone enjoyed wonderful melodious kirtan, recited by Sarabjit Singh. The GGSCF youth were also given the opportunity to do a shabad, and our theme shabad for the run, “Aukhi gharee na dekhan deyi” was done by Inderpal, Navneet, Prableen, Pavan, Tanjot, & Jeevanjot.

After kirtan, Gagandeep was invited to the stage to explain to the sangat about our event and initiative, and did a great job!MLA. Leonard Preyra for the Halifax Citadel-Sable Island Constituency in Halifax, & the mayor of Halifax, Peter Kelley also addressed the sangat, and congratulated the youth for taking an initiative to make a difference, while offering their best wishes for a successful event. Mayor Kelley, presented the GGSCF with a Certificate of Appreciation, and well wishes from the Members of Halifax Regional Council in recognition of our work and donation to support the IWK Health Centre, which was received by Gagandeep.

The Maritime Sikh Society, graciously presented a generous donation of $2000 to the GGSCF in support of the run and our cause, which was accepted by Amandeep Saggu, who then presented a cheque for $5000 to Shiv Sadhu, representative of the IWK Health Centre Foundation. We had a great interest from the sangat to find out what the run was like and how our trip has been so far, so we also made a brief presentation that consisted of some pictures and a short video clip of our first few days of the run. As a small token of our appreciation for the wonderful hospitality, love and support that we received from them, Aman Chahal presented the Maritime Sikh Society, and Amritpaul presented Mayor Kelley with the Children’s Run Across Canada T-shirts.

We greatly appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the committee members of the Maritime Sikh Society, especially President, Jagpal Tiwana Uncle Ji, who coordinated and arranged for the media, dignitaries, accommodations with families, along with making sure we were all taken care of and received maximum exposure and recognition amongst the Maritime Sikh Society.

We made and met some wonderful friends in Halifax, and although it was a short trip, it certainly will stay with us in our thoughts and memories.

We left Halifax, and headed over to Pictou, Nova Scotia to catch the 1.5 hour ferry to PEI (a much shorter, and pleasant ride). Navneet & Rupinder Jaswal treated the entire group to a tasty treat of fries and soft drinks on the ferry (we were after all heading to the land of potatoes, and what better way to enjoy them than fries on the way to PEI!) on behalf of their families as sewa for the group.

Other than the sights of PEI and the yummy fries, we weren’t expecting the Ferry ride to be very eventful, but thankfully, lots of surprises can come your way when you travel as a bright and colorful group of 30 running across Canada for a good cause! We received just such a surprise, as we were finishing off our fries, and were invited to join the Captain on the deck! All the kids were ecstatic and welcomed the opportunity of seeing behind the wheel from the Captain’s view on the deck! We were free to look around, and the view was definitely something to indulge in! The Captain not only encouraged and congratulated the group, but also made a personal donation to our fundraising goal and cause! Having his support was really wonderful and delightful! It was just great to have so much support throughout on our trip, and we were all happy to be receiving it because it certainly makes the hard work worth it when you see other people have faith and believe in you, and be inspired by our little efforts!

I really apreciated of Maritime Sikh Society Gurdwara Sangat, Halifax Mayor Mr. Peter Kelly and council members for their support, respect and incourgement given to Guru Gobind Singh Children foundation. They did not show their love only for GGSCF, its was love for our Gurus. This whole credit goes to our Ten Gurus and Guru Granth Sahib Ji, from where we got spirit and strength to start this cause. I hope the rest of the route Sangat will keep up this spirit.
