Stage 20
Shannonville, ON to Bowmanville, ON.

Centre Team 1 began the day in Belleville at six o’clock in the morning. The runners were fortunate enough to enjoy pleasant weather while completing over one hundred kilometers. Runners were accompanied on the road with friendly creatures such as Gardner snakes, dogs and cows.

While on Highway 2, we also passed CFB Trenton where we saw Canadian military planes, tanks and armoured personnel carriers. We also saw Canadian troops at Tim Hortons. The place also reminded us that this is where our “heroes” who have laid down their lives for service to their country return from overseas missions.

During the lunch break, the runners ate at a Subway restaurant, owned by Mr. Grewal in Cobourg, who provided all the runners with a free lunch. The team had randomly chosen the Subway restaurant that ended up belonging to the friends of the families that we had met in Belleville. The owner was delighted to meet the team and called other friends in the community who met and spoke to all the runners. The family’s support and encouragement was once again a reminder of all the wonderful people the Centre Team has had a chance to meet over the course of the run so far.

The family was so impressed by the run that they registered their daughter as a participant on Centre Team 2. The runners were spoiled for scenery as we ran alongside beautiful small towns and Lake Ontario. We look forward to more friendly encounters as Centre Team continues to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In the evening, the team reached Bowmanville where they met with City Councilor Ron Collis who wished them well and presented a cheque to the runners. He also told the participants how fortunate they were to experience Canada and that these memories would be with them for a lifetime.
