Stage 29
Montreal River, ON to Wawa, ON.

The morning of July 29th started off as a rain day, with frigid cold weather in Wawa, Ontario. We were in the clouds most of the morning; these come off Lake Superior and make the weather cold so we had to heat our vehicles and burn wood logs in our chalet. The word “Wawa” actually means wild goose and today we ran like the wild geese to the township of Wawa.

The runners began to thaw out as they ran through Wawa, Ontario. The first team was to depart from the Wawa Motor Inn in the early morning hours. They ran their full course in good spirits, despite the weather conditions. The second team departed later that morning, unfortunately they were not able to finish their full course as they were halted by a flat tire. Both teams joined back up at the Motor Inn for a home cooked Indian lunch. The van’s tire was replaced and the time lost was made up by a volunteer team formed from the first and second teams. This new team ran their hearts out completing an impressive combined total of 57 miles.

The runners were also able to focus on the run as in these remote areas of Northern Ontario there is no telephone reception. However, this allowed us to see the beauty of Ontario which is very much like British Columbia, with lots of green forests and lakes, just that the high rocky mountains are missing. The roads twist and turn for miles and miles with very few communities. The information centre said there are communities about every 100km but in between are provincial parks and camping grounds. Some Punjabi truckers also stopped during the run and asked if they could be of any service and also donated some cash towards the fund raising goal. It is so nice to see the support even in these remote places as truckers and others honk their horns in support and wave at us as they pass us by.

As the day came to an end, both teams joined back up for another lovely dinner. Dessert was served by the fire side as the group enjoyed smoldering smores and rice crispy squares. The team enjoyed some down time by playing card games until bed time. The fun will not stop here as tomorrow has much excitement in store for us!
