Stage 34
Shabaqua, ON to English River, ON.

It was a frosty morning and the first team bravely began the 34th day of the run. While the persistent rain has been challenging throughout the run, this morning its effects had begun to show with some of the runners feeling under the weather. Each team had awesome first shifts even with several runners who needed to take it easy despite their enthusiasm to contribute. After both teams completed their first full shifts, the first team and the second team combined to form the new team, affectionately nicknamed the “Dream Team”. This allowed some of the runners some much needed rest in the afternoon while the new team ran their hearts out to complete an amazing 64 km within their three hour shift. One highlight of the day included a train that was travelling in the opposite direction of the runners which honked to support our runners’ efforts. The team was even lucky enough to catch sight of a black bear within meters of the runners. It has been truly amazing to realize the difference in scenery and company found in Ontario, where most of us live.

We also passed the Central Time Zone line meaning the time for us goes back one hour. This means one more hour of running or maybe one more hour of sleep.

Sikh truck drivers (Manjit S. Hayre, Bikramjit S. Virk and Kuldip S. Randhawa) who had seen us along their route stopped to donate and offered some home cooked Indian food. We gladly accepted on behalf of the adults who were missing their saag and roti. A medical doctor (Dr. Harbhajan S. Dhailwal) who practices in Western Canada also saw our teams running and donated asked that we contact him once we reach Winnipeg so that he may be involved.

The teams joined back up in the evening at the Holiday Inn in Dryden, Ontario to share an amazing pasta dinner and some pictures of the day including a few “bear” and “deer” stories. Tomorrow, the teams will be well rested and reenergized to continue their journey towards the next province, Manitoba which we should reach by the end of the week.
