Stage 38
Transcona, MB to Portage La Prairie, MB.

On drizzly weather this morning, at 7am, the Blue Team started the run into the city of Winnipeg along HWY 115. Winnipeg Police escorted us through the city allowing us to pass through red lights. At 7:45am we ran up to the Manitoba Legislative Building and were greeted at the steps by local community leaders and also the West Team who had driven up to Winnipeg overnight.

On the steps Avneet Kaur Jaswal gave a speech outlining the purpose of the Run Across Canada. A cheque for $5000 was presented to Patti Smith who represented the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. She mentioned how moved she was that the Sikh youth had so much energy and enthusiasm to help others in the community that were in need. Last year she mentioned that the Children’s Hospital in Manitoba helped over 130,000 children. Joy Smith Member of Parliament also congratulated all the runners and volunteers and quoted Elenore Roosevelt who mentioned that “important decisions are made by a small group of people” and this run is an excellent example of this. She also mentioned to the runners that our parents and grandparents must be really proud of all of us. Mohinder Saran the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba welcomed all the runners to Manitoba and gave pins. He also mentioned the importance of sewa and Sikhism and how proud he was to see the concept of sewa being extended into the larger Canadian community. Kapur Singh then presented the runners with a plaque.

The GGSCF also acknowledged Amarjit Singh Wrech President of the Punjabi Culture Centre, Nirmal Singh from the Kalgidhar Darbar Gurdwara and Gurmeet Singh Brar from Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara.

After the presentation, the runners continued westward out of the city of Winnipeg. In the evening there was a kirtan program at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara from 7pm to 8pm. Here the runners presented some slides showing the run from its start at St. John’s to the city of Winnipeg. Members of the sangat gave donations to encourage the particpants in meeting their goal. In the evening the teams changed as the Centre Team handed over the Nishan Sahib to the West Team and wished them well on their journey onto Vancouver.
