Stage 40
Portage La Prairie, MB to Brandon, MB.

Today marked the first day of the west team that arrived from Toronto. All were up early in the morning and after breakfast at 5:30am at the Hampton Inn, downtown Winnipeg, the first Blue Team headed to Portage-la-Prairie. There, at the City Hall, Chiranjeev did the Ardas and then the run started down the Trans Canada Highway heading west to Brandon. Most of the morning was spent learning how the teams are to function, the switch over between the relay runners, and working out safety issues and also recording log of all the runners. Lunch was served in Austin and on the menu was pasta, salad, cheese/biscuits and fruit. All the things were made in the RV, as the local roadside restaurant was closed. The weather was hot and the sun beat down on the pavement all day. There was no breeze to cool the runners but they pushed on and on. The roads here go straight into the distance, as far as the eye can see, and so setting yourself reference markers are difficult unless you can see road signs. Population is also sparse with agricultural land and farms as far as you can see. The day ended in Brandon where the group took pictures outside the City Hall. Then all went for dinner at the local Pizza Hut to work out details for tomorrow. Two team leaders for chosen for the Blue and Yellow teams and chores were assigned to each. Both teams had quick meetings to spilt the responsibility between all the participants. Our day ended at the Comfort Inn where there was a World War 2 plane a Bristol Bolingbroke Mk IV restored in memory of the many Canadian who gave their lives. It was good to see this preservation of history and remember those who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.
