Stage 44
Regina, SK to Parkbeg, SK.

The blue team headed out early today during the crisp morning. They were up bright and early to run to Saskatchewan’s Legislative building to meet with dignitaries and the local community. There was tremendous support from the Regina community, which joined us for the early morning program, which we really appreciated. We met with the MLA Trent Wotherspoon and took pictures. Paneet Kaur delivered a speech about the foundation and we also had representatives from the Children’s Health and Hospital Foundation Saskatchewan, Steve, Nicole, and Ethan Cook receive a cheque for $5000 on behalf of the hospital which is forthcoming. After the program the yellow team runners coasted along the beautiful park surrounding the legislative building. The route was scenic, surrounded by lovely flower gardens and a lake. The runners were escorted through the city by Regina Police and headed back on to the highway toward Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Both teams ran hard through the prairies, enjoying a wonderful day and watching the prairie dogs scurry around, popping their heads out from their burrows. Many runners were starting to feel the fatigue from the many days of running, and some continued to even challenge themselves by increasing the distance they covered on each shift and had friendly challenges with their team mates. When we arrived in Moose Jaw, we met with Deputy Mayor Regina Sagal-Hendry who encouraged the runners and presented them all with pins. The team took pictures with Mac the Moose, which is a giant moose, and were intrigued by its incredible size. We learned that the city got its name because the aboriginals used to call it ‘Moose Gaw’, which means ‘warm summer breeze’, and since there is also a river shaped like a moose’s jaw, the city was named Moose Jaw. We had langar which the sangat of the Sikh Society of Regina had kindly provided, and headed onward to Parkbeg.

In the evening, all runners showered up and had a delicious dinner prepared by Kamaljit Kaur Chhokar and Surjit Singh Chhokar and their family at their Park Lodge restaurant in Moose Jaw. The hospitality was heartfelt and the runners really appreciated the kindness shown by the family. With very minimal time they prepared many dishes and fed the runners and volunteers to their hearts’ content. Thank you so much!

With full bellies the teams headed back to their rooms to rest for another exciting day in the prairies of Canada.
