During the last two weeks collection was made from the Sikh Sangat from 18 Gurdwaras across Toronto in support of the Toronto Daily Bread Food Bank and Seva Food Bank. On November 14, 2011 the food, 6710 lbs was delivered to the Daily Bread Food Bank. This was the 10th year the food drive was held on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab. This food amount is in addition to the food collected by Seva Food Bank on November 12, 2011 with the assistance of the Punjabi media. The GGSCF would like to thank all those who contributed and donated to this cause.

ggscfDespite the cold weather and long day, Volunteers came out to support the Annual Scotia bank Toronto Waterfront Half/ Full Marathon on Sunday October 16th,2011. This event is co-ordinated with the Canada Running Series which includes the Annual Sporting Life 10 K Marathon in May that the GGSCF also partook in. simg_7941On Monday evening just before heading to the airport for a flight to England, Fauja Singh presented a $12,609 cheque to the SickKids Foundation. “Sikhs in the City” team from England and GGSCF volunteers turned up at very short notice to be present, many who had helped to collect the funds from the Sikh community on the occasion of Fauja Singh setting eight new world records at Birchmount Stadium Read more…

img_9074_01_0100 year old Fauja Singh made history this weekend at the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon in Toronto by becoming the oldest person to ever complete the full marathon. He completed the gruelling distance of 42km in just over 8 hours and was welcomed by hundreds of supporters (“Fauja Fever”) at the finish line. “He is absolutely overjoyed, he’s achieved his long life wish” stated his coach Harmander Singh. It was remarkable accomplishment that provides proof that impossible is nothing. We hope in time this will inspire others to take the challenge and take on doing the 5km, half or full marathon distances. Read more…

Oct 29th is going to be a tremendously exciting day for the Guru Gobind Singh Children’s Foundation as together we are going to be playing host to a special guest advocate group called Invisible Children. Invisible Children is non-profit organization which was created to giving individuals a way to respond to the situation in Uganda where many innocent children have been and are being forcefully inducted into the war rebellion.  The story of the invisible children sparked a grassroots movement mobilizing thousands of American teens into action to raise money to rebuild war-torn schools in northern Uganda and provide scholarships to African youth and now they are on a North American tour to show their new documentary and keep the movement alive. fauja-singhFAUJA SINGH in TORONTO – October 13, 2011 Birchmount Stadium – 8:00am to 12:00noon – Located northeast corner of Kingston Road/Birchmount, Scarborough M1N 3J7 Fauja Singh will be training and running the following distances – 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 1609m (1mile), 3000m and 5000m distances. It is possible that there may be some new records as some of these distances have not been run by a man in his age category up till now. The Sikh community is urged to come out and support him and in some cases there may be an opportunity to run alongside him.

National Banquet Hall – 6:00pm to 7:00pm – 7355 Torbram Road, Mississauga L4T 3W3 The Guru Gobind Singh Children’s Foundation (GGSCF) is having celebration with Fauja Singh 100th Birthday. Everyone is invited to come and meet him and have some cake and tea. In honour of this special occasion the GGSCF will be collecting donations for SickKids Foundation. The target is to collect $12,609 (in other words $1 for every metre Fauja Singh runs at Birchmount Stadium). Because of the short notice we will announce where people can hand in donations but the best place would be at the stadium in the morning or at the banquet hall. Tax-receipts will be available at both locations.

Further to the earlier Press Release issued on 22Sep2011, this is a update on Fauja Singh’s program when he visits us next week. Please let your readers/listeners know that he will be coming and that they can see him at the venues identified on the latest Press Release. At the moment we do not know if he will be running in the STWM as this depends upon his health but I know everyone wants him to and some papers have already reported this. However it would be good if you can encourage our community to come out and support him at Birchmount Stadium as runners may get a chance to run alongside him. Read more…

02img_7250It was a remarkable sight along the coast of Lake Ontario as runners and walkers clad in the signature yellow shirts participated in charity run this past weekend.  Over 150 participants and volunteers took part in this year’s 5 km Children Helping Children Charity Run along the Mississauga Waterfront Trail in the town of Port Credit.  A scenic route that began and finished at J.C. Saddington Park followed the trail along the coast of Lake Ontario. It was the first charity run since the youth participated in Children’s Run Across Canada in the summer of 2009. Many individuals were very eager to take part in their first event with the GGSCF and it was also very exciting to see many new faces who would like to continue to volunteer with the foundation.
