Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada
The GGSCF had its first trip to the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada during the winter break. The idea for the museum visit was from the youth themselves. Pardeep Singh Nagra the Executive Director of the Museum welcomed the group and shared why the museum was important and the dedication of individuals to preserve the history of those who came to Canada. The children, youth and young adults learned about the Sikhs first coming to Canada, the hardships they faced, the discriminations and racism faces by these pioneers, how their hard work and support led them to put roots for the flourishing community that exists today. He shared the history to the predominant members who fought for Canada in the World War, even though they had later to fight for their right to vote and gradually become equal citizens to those who initially discriminated against them and other non-white minority communities such as the Chinese, Japanese and the people of the First Nations. Many retained their Sikh appearance and faith, as well as supporting the freedom of their homeland India.
