STWM Enjoyment

20 October 2013

stwm2013_1For 10 years now, the GGSCF has been taking part in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM) ever since Fauja Singh became the first person to break the 6 hour barrier for those over 90 years of age. This year although Fauja Singh was not here, his running club, Sikhs in the City, had a 6-person team from the UK lead by Harmander Singh (coach to Fauja Singh). GGSCF participants were in all events and their names and times are listed below:

Sukhjeet Kaur Hayre 3h 00m 15s
Simrit Singh Mangat 29m 28s
Sukhdeep Singh Mangat 32m 23s
Balvinder Kaur 41m 53s

Special mention to proud mum Balvinder Kaur with her sons Simrit and Sukhdeep who completed the 5km run and want to take part in the Half-Marathon next year. Ushpreet who turned 16 years of age two days prior to the race (which meant she qualified to run) ran her first ever Half-Marathon. Two of our runners, Paramjit and Harjot, broke the 4-hour barrier and many others the 5-hour barrier. Over 25,000 took part of which 17,000 were in the Half and Full-Marathon and the rest in the 5K. It was good to see some of those who took part in “Inspirational Steps” in May go on to take part in the STWM, the largest run of this type in Canada. If you missed it this year, do not worry as we get to do it again next year!
