Vaisakhi Radiothon

13 April 2016

vaisakhiradiothon1On April 13th, Foundation volunteers filled the radio waves of AM770 to wish sangat of the Greater Toronto Area a Happy Vaisakhi and make a collection for the children we support. Although many of us were nervous about how it would turn out since we hadn’t advertised or done a great build up leading into the event, we learned that our community was full of love and kindness as they pledged a total of $26,240.13. It was an outstanding amount that was collected in five hours on three different radio programs. We conducted a full program with Jagdish Grewal from 8-10am, Yudhvir Jaswal from 10-12pm, and Rana Sidhu from 2-3pm, for whom we are grateful for giving us time on their show.

We were amazed with response and the words of encouragement we received on air by donors and supporters. For an organization that does not rely heavily on such fundraising efforts on a yearly basis, it showed us how many people do recognize the work we do in the community and are willing to support our cause. We are hoping to do this on a yearly basis on/around Vaisakhi and plan to discuss how we can make it even better. One short story we would like to share was about a special 11 year old boy named Jonveer, who called in and said he would like to donate his birthday money to help the children in need. The amount did not matter – it never does – but it was the principle and mindset he had to not be selfish. For us, this was an amazing showcase of Sarbat da Bhalla and highlighted our motto “children helping children” and why we exist today. I think we all were amazed by his actions and thanked him for making his donation. About 5 calls later, Jonveer called in studio again and said he forgot to do something. He forgot to give a jakara. Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akal!
